The anatomy of the goats hoof is pretty straightforward. The shape and quality of the hooves can definately be influenced by genetics. Growth of the hooves can also be influenced by the diet of the goat. Here on our ranch, we select for strong well-shaped hooves that require no trimming. This trait is especially important to us in the sire bucks.

When trimming an older goat whose hooves are overgrown, it can be helpful to take note of the shape of a newborn kids hooves. See below..
